Quetzalcoatl ascends to the heavens to fetch the virgin goddess of the maguey, Mayahuel, whom he finds asleep. So as not to disturb the girl’s terrifying grandmother, they steal away to earth and guise themselves as branches of a forked tree. Furious at the discovery of her granddaughter’s treachery, Tzitzimitl deploys her light devouring demons the Tzitzimime to seek them out. A gruesome battle ensues in which Quetzalcoatl defeats Tzitzimitl and her henchmen in a Pyrrhic victory. Light returns to earth but not to Quetzalcoatl whose precious Mayahuel lay slain. Grief stricken, he buries the remains of his beloved and from that bit of earth grows the first Maguey. It is believed that the gods took pity on Quetzalcoatl’s broken heart and gifted the nectar of that maguey with special properties to soothe his heartache. Your journey to divining the wisdom of the Blue Agave comes into modern times with this battle cry. Every 16th of September is remembered for the historic battle cry of Padre Miguel Hidalgo, the Father of the Mexican Revolution. His cry was a call to arms that propelled the 1810 fight for independence from European tyranny.
3rd Battle: Puebla In 1862, the Mexican army (passionate and outnumbered) deflects a French invasion on the city of Puebla. Though the French later return and overtake the town of Puebla, this significant moral victory is honored each year with festive celebrations in México and abroad. Happy Cinco de Mayo, Compadre!
4th Battle: El Porfiriato Suffer through 30 years of “pan, or palo” (bread or the stick) under rule of General Porfirio Diaz. This is a period not highly remembered for its peace keepings, but rather the economic developments and manipulative political tactics of Porfirio Diaz.
5th Battle: La Plan de San Luis Potosi A violent revolt against the tyrannical Diaz is drafted and set for November 20, 1910. While not a success, the effort inspires the ideological revolutionary causes of peasant heroes Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa, and Pascual Orozco.
